Having a sacred space where you can go to ground yourself, reconnect and find your inner OM...is so important. My altar is my sanctuary, my spa, my blankie. Whenever I feel out of sort- that's code for anxious, fearful, angry, cray- I come here.
Setting up your own sacred space can be fun and spirit awakening.
I'm gonna to give you two different ways you can go about this- I've used both.
I'm Asian and so I love rules ;) . The first time I decided to create an altar I googled endlessly about the how's, the elements, symbols, what I should include and consider. This is what I synthesized and followed:
- Elements and their directions: Fire: South | Water: West | Air: East | Earth: North | Spirit: Center
- I used the compass on my IPhone to find out what was N, S, E, W.
- Symbols for each element: Fire: candles | Water: Rose water mist or a sea shell | Air: incense or a feather | Earth: plant or crystals | Spirit: something black, white or rainbow, flower of life symbol
- I put everything in its appropriate place. It felt good.
I'm also an Aries and so I love to break the rules. Eventually, my altar became an organized hodge-podge of all things I loved- quotes, photos, malas, elixirs, flower essences, coins- anything that was sacred to me or reminded me of someone sacred. The lines began to blur and on some days you can even find a candle on the East side- rebel.
Ultimately, you can do what feels right...correction....you should only do what feels right. As you might know, I'm a planner, so what felt right to me was to learn the traditional way and then make it my own.
I've been on this journey of personal evolution for some time now. What I've learned is that the work can be hard and heavy. That having a sacred space for yourself can infuse some much needed light into the process of unraveling making the journey a little easier. Which is also my intention with the Shift Sessions. To offer a space, like an altar, where you can recharge, lighten up and create internal room so that the inner work can flow.
So whether you sign up for a session with me or dive heart first into creating an altar of your own, whether you follow the rules or say fuck it to all of them...just remember this, it's our job to create the light and every little bit of it helps us through the dark.
